Job Description

R1 RCM is seeking experienced Medical Coders/Senior Medical Coders with coding certifications (CIC or CCS) and 1 to 7+ years of experience in IP DRG medical coding. The ideal candidate will be responsible for reviewing inpatient medical records and assigning accurate ICD-10-CM and PCS codes, ensuring adherence to coding guidelines and effective communication with stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review patient medical records following PHI and HIPAA guidelines and convert them into medical coding codes as per ICD-10-CM and PCS guidelines.
  • Complete daily assigned tasks within the stipulated time, ensuring quality and timely communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and guidelines.
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM (PDx and SDx) and PCS codes for diagnoses and procedures based on medical record documentation.
  • Sequence codes accurately and assign POA indicators correctly.
  • Understand and apply medical necessity, DRGs, APGs, and APRs for processing claims.
  • Adhere to coding clinics and guidelines, and query physicians for clarification as needed.
  • Monitor account status regularly and follow up with respective leaders when necessary.
  • Knowledge of 3M coding, Optum, computer-assisted coding (CAC), abstracting software, and Meditech will be an added advantage.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 1 to 7+ years of work experience in IP DRG medical coding.
  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree.
  • Successful completion of a certification program from AHIMA (CCS) or AAPC (CIC), which must be active during joining and verified.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to reply to emails professionally to clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to business/process requirements.
