How Much PF Is Deducted from Salary? Formula and Payslip Examples

PF deducted from your salary is based on the applicable contributory wage base and rate. It is not generally calculated by taking a percentage of your annual CTC. To check a payslip, first ask payroll which earnings form the PF wage base for that month and whether contribution is restricted to an applicable ceiling or calculated on higher wages.

PF contribution calculator

Estimate monthly contributions using the wage base and contribution arrangement confirmed by your payroll team.

Formula: contribution wage base × rate, plus the voluntary amount for the employee. This estimates contributions, not an EPF balance or pension entitlement. Employer EPF/EPS allocation, EDLI, administration costs, membership, arrears and payroll rounding are separate. The ₹25,000 ceiling is a current example; use the applicable amount for the wage month.

Calculated on your device. These calculator inputs are not submitted by this tool or saved to a server.

A simple calculation

For an illustrative employee whose applicable PF wages are ₹20,000 and contribution rate is 12%, the employee contribution is ₹2,400 for the month. If another employee's applicable base is ₹25,000 at the same rate, the arithmetic gives ₹3,000. These are calculation examples, not findings that every employee on those salaries must have those deductions.

The employer contribution is a separate item. Where included in CTC, it should not be confused with a second employee deduction from gross salary. Pension allocation, contribution ceilings and higher-wage arrangements can affect how the employer amount is displayed. EPFO's scheme provisions are the starting point for the legal calculation.

Why an old ₹1,800 answer may be incomplete

Many older explanations use 12% of ₹15,000. A PIB announcement dated 17 September 2026 reports an increase in the mandatory EPF coverage ceiling to ₹25,000. Coverage eligibility and the precise contribution treatment of a member are distinct questions. Ask payroll to identify the current notification, wage definition and ceiling applied to your record rather than copying a historical example.

Reconcile three records

Compare the salary slip, the employer's explanation of PF wages and the entry in your member account. A payslip shows what was deducted; the member record helps check what was deposited. For a partial month, unpaid leave, arrears or a correction, request the calculation for that specific wage month.

What to ask HR

Write: "Please confirm my PF wage base, applicable rate, ceiling or higher-wage treatment, employee contribution and employer allocation for this month." Attach the relevant payslip, without sharing sensitive identity documents publicly. If an issue remains unresolved, use EPFO's official support or grievance route through its website.

For in-hand salary planning, subtract the actual employee deduction from gross earnings alongside other applicable deductions. Do not subtract the entire employer CTC provision again.

Which salary number belongs in the PF calculator?

Use the contributory wage base established for PF, not the figure advertised as CTC and not automatically the amount credited by the bank. CTC may include employer costs and annual benefits. Bank credit is after deductions. Payroll should explain which wage components and statutory provisions produce the PF base for that month.

The calculator allows a capped base or the full wage amount entered. Those choices model an arrangement; they do not authorise you to choose a lower contribution outside the applicable rules. For a historical wage month, use the applicable ceiling and rates for that period. A change implemented part-way through a period may require payroll treatment that a single-month illustration does not model.

Examples that explain different deductions

With entered PF wages of ₹30,000, a ₹25,000 illustrative ceiling and a 12% rate, the capped-base arithmetic is ₹3,000 for the employee. Under a confirmed full-wage arrangement using ₹30,000 at 12%, it is ₹3,600. If a further ₹1,000 voluntary employee contribution is entered, the latter employee total becomes ₹4,600. These examples show the difference made by inputs; they do not establish which arrangement applies to a reader.

The employer result is shown before any EPF/EPS allocation. Do not treat that whole number as an amount credited to the EPF savings balance. The employer's pension allocation, insurance and administrative obligations need separate records. A voluntary employee amount also does not automatically require matching voluntary employer payment.

Reconciling the first month in a new job

Check whether the payslip represents a full month, arrears or unpaid days. Ask for the wage base and rate, compare the expected employee deduction, then inspect the contribution record. Where the employer uses an exempted trust, request the appropriate statement. Keep a month-by-month table if you are investigating several differences; a single latest balance is not a detailed reconciliation.

If there is a discrepancy, provide the specific month and amount in a written query. Avoid changing calculator inputs repeatedly until they happen to match the payslip without understanding why. The purpose is to reproduce the documented calculation and identify the missing assumption.
