Best Health Insurance for Employees in India: Compare Beyond Company Cover

The right health insurance for an employee depends on family needs, existing company cover, affordability and the policy wording. A plan should not be called best simply because its advertisement shows the largest cover multiple. Compare what happens in a realistic hospital bill and during a job change.

Health-cover out-of-pocket illustration

Model a simplified claim using an admissible bill, a deductible, a co-payment and remaining cover you have confirmed from the policy.

This model subtracts the deductible first, then applies co-payment, then limits the insurer share to remaining cover. Actual policy order, sub-limits, room deductions and top-up aggregate deductibles can differ. It is not a claim approval or settlement quotation. Confirm admissible expenses and wording with the insurer.

Start with your employer policy

Ask HR for the policy schedule and customer information, including the insurer, sum insured, covered family members, room limits, co-payments and sub-limits. Check whether maternity, parents or outpatient care is included. Coverage stated by a colleague may belong to another employee grade, location or optional paid arrangement.

Build a retail-policy shortlist

Examples to investigate include HDFC ERGO's health plans and brochures, Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0 and Care Supreme. These are comparison starting points, not a personalised recommendation or a claim that one insurer is universally better. Confirm the exact product version offered, obtain its current wording and compare quotations for the same people and base sum insured.

Compare the bill you might face

For each quotation, record the premium, deductible, co-payment, room eligibility, disease sub-limits, waiting periods, exclusions and your preferred hospitals. Ask how restoration benefits work for a single claim and later claims. A marketing total made from several benefits may not equal the amount available for one admission.

For illustration, a policy with a hypothetical 20% co-payment on an otherwise admissible ₹2 lakh claim could leave ₹40,000 of that amount with the insured person, before considering any other deductions. That is an arithmetic example, not a feature attributed to the plans listed above. It shows why premium alone is an incomplete comparison.

Plan for a change of employer

Check the exact end date of company cover and whether an insurer offers a suitable migration route. The 2024 insurance product regulations address migration and portability subject to their conditions. Do not assume every employer policy automatically becomes identical individual cover without underwriting or a premium.

Use official insurer pages to request policy documents and a quotation. Disclose medical information accurately through the insurer's authorised process. A sensible shortlist is the one whose exclusions, claim process and long-term premium you understand before paying.

Compare policy wording rather than cover multiples

For each shortlisted product, obtain the current customer information sheet, prospectus and wording for the variant being quoted. Write down the base sum insured separately from restoration, bonus and other added benefits. Ask whether a single claim can use the advertised total, whether restoration applies to the same illness and when any added cover becomes available.

For HDFC ERGO, use its official brochure library to identify the current Optima Secure document and UIN. For Niva Bupa, make sure the quotation and wording name the same ReAssure version. For Care, distinguish Care Supreme from similarly named variants. A comparison of different product versions can be wrong even if every document came from an official insurer site.

Build a quotation sheet for your family

Use the same ages, city, declared medical history, base cover and policy duration when requesting quotes. Compare room eligibility, co-payment, deductibles, disease limits, waiting periods and exclusions. Check whether an attractive premium depends on a restricted hospital network, voluntary deductible or other condition you would not choose in the alternative policy.

Do not compare an individual plan for one healthy adult with a floater covering parents and call the cheaper premium better. Parent cover may need a separate assessment because age, medical history and affordability differ. Choose a premium you can continue paying, not just a first-year promotional price.

What an out-of-pocket example can show

The tool below illustrates a deductible, co-payment and remaining-cover limit in a stated order. Enter an admissible bill rather than assuming the entire hospital invoice is admissible. Add excluded items separately. If your policy applies these features in another order or has room-linked deductions, the simplified result is not its settlement calculation.

Questions before paying

Ask for the proposal copy, the accepted medical declarations, the exact exclusions and the policy start date. Check your preferred hospitals directly with the insurer and keep the claims contact. If an agent promises a benefit that is not clear in the wording, obtain an insurer confirmation. A verbal assurance and a marketing cover multiple are not substitutes for the contract governing a claim.
