What Is Group Medical Insurance? Employee Cover and Common Gaps

Group medical insurance covers eligible members under a policy arranged for a group, such as an employer's workforce. The employer or another master policyholder selects the arrangement. Your actual cover comes from the policy schedule and terms, not simply from being told that the company provides mediclaim.

Model a simplified claim using an admissible bill, a deductible, a co-payment and remaining cover you have confirmed from the policy.

This model subtracts the deductible first, then applies co-payment, then limits the insurer share to remaining cover. Actual policy order, sub-limits, room deductions and top-up aggregate deductibles can differ. It is not a claim approval or settlement quotation. Confirm admissible expenses and wording with the insurer.

Find out who is insured

Ask whether cover includes you alone, a spouse, children or parents, and whether dependants require payment or enrolment. Confirm the effective date, base sum insured and whether family members share one limit. Joining a company and receiving an insurance card are administrative events; verify when cover actually begins.

Read the limits that affect a claim

Check room eligibility, co-payments, deductibles, disease-specific sub-limits, maternity conditions, waiting periods and exclusions. Some employer arrangements differ substantially from retail policies. Do not assume either that all pre-existing conditions are excluded or that every corporate plan covers them immediately. Ask for the exact clause.

Cashless does not mean every expense is payable

Confirm the network hospital and pre-authorisation process with the insurer or authorised administrator. A cashless request is subject to policy terms and approval. Even an approved hospitalisation can include non-payable items or amounts outside the admissible benefit. Keep emergency contact and claim instructions available to a family member.

A job-change gap to avoid

Imagine an employee resigns in one month and the next employer's cover starts later. Assuming the old policy continues indefinitely could leave a gap. Ask the current HR team for the end date and the insurer for any available continuation or migration route before exit.

The 2024 insurance product regulations contain provisions on migration and portability. Conditions, underwriting and continuity benefits must be checked for the actual case. Do not rely on a promise that a group policy transfers unchanged to any retail plan.

What to keep

Retain the schedule or certificate, customer information, enrolment confirmation, claims contact and any paid top-up details. For agency staff at a pharma company, confirm whether the staffing employer or the client provides cover. If you decide to compare separate personal insurance, obtain official policy wordings and quotations for your own family rather than comparing only brochure cover amounts.

Ask for a personalised cover summary

Write down the policy number or certificate details, insured members, policy dates, usable sum insured and contact route. Confirm whether family members have been enrolled rather than assuming that entering their names in an HR form completed the process. Ask how new dependants are added and when changes become effective.

Understand the layers in a hospital bill

The total invoice, admissible amount and insurer payment can be different. Non-payable items, room-related conditions, disease limits, deductibles, co-payment and exhausted cover can affect the result. A network hospital or cashless approval does not mean every invoice item is automatically payable.

The illustration tool below starts with the amount assumed admissible before the modelled deductible. It then applies the stated co-payment and remaining-cover limit. Add non-payable expenses separately. This makes the arithmetic visible, but your policy may order these features differently or apply other conditions. A top-up policy with an aggregate deductible needs its own policy-period assessment.

Compare base cover and optional top-ups

Ask whether the employer pays for the base cover and whether an optional top-up requires an employee premium. Establish the deductible, the policy period and who is covered. A high top-up limit can be less useful than it appears if you do not understand when its deductible is satisfied. Keep the documents for each layer rather than merging them into one assumed cover amount.

What happens during a job change?

Get the end date of employer cover in writing and ask about any migration option early. Compare the next employer's start date and enrolment process so a gap is visible. Do not assume a pending claim or a hospital card automatically extends insurance indefinitely after employment ends.

For a disagreement, identify the policy clause, admissible amount and explanation of deductions before escalating through the insurer's grievance process. Keep medical and claim documents private. HR can help identify the arrangement, but the policy wording and insurer's claim process determine how a particular claim is assessed.
