The best salary account is the one your employer can support at a reasonable ongoing cost, with reliable access where you actually work. For a production employee near a manufacturing site, branch and ATM access may matter more than a premium debit-card offer. For a travelling medical representative, payment reliability and service support may carry more weight.
Salary-account annual-cost comparison
Compare two written fee quotations. Include applicable taxes in the amounts you enter; benefits and interest are not valued by this tool.
Annual cost = annual fees entered + monthly charge × charged months. Charges may use daily or average-balance rules; enter the bank-confirmed applicable charge. Zero defaults are examples and do not mean that either bank is universally free. Insurance payouts and promotional headline benefits are not cash savings.

Compare the account you will actually receive
HDFC Bank's Regular Salary Account, ICICI Bank's Regular Salary Account, SBI's Corporate Salary Package and Axis Bank's salary programme are useful starting points. They are programmes with variants, rather than four identical products. Ask HR for the bank, exact variant and corporate offer applicable to your payroll before comparing benefits.
HDFC's eligibility page lists a monthly salary threshold of ₹15,000 and an employer salary-account relationship. ICICI's Regular Salary Account describes no average monthly balance requirement while salary credits remain regular. SBI's Corporate Salary Package links package variants to net monthly salary. Axis's salary programme offers several variants; use the one available through your employer, not the most expensive-looking brochure.
A practical selection method
Give each available account a score from zero to two for local access, digital payments, customer support, documented charges and benefits you will genuinely use. Then add a separate check for what happens when salary stops. This is an editorial decision aid, not a bank performance ranking or a survey of customer satisfaction.
Suppose two accounts meet your needs equally well. One includes a benefit you would never purchase; the other has a conveniently located branch near your plant. The practical choice may be the second account, even when its advertised benefits total looks smaller. Do not treat the maximum advertised insurance cover as guaranteed payment: eligibility, transactions, exclusions and claim conditions still matter.
Before you open an account
Collect the current charge schedule, employer programme code and account-conversion terms. Confirm whether optional investments, insurance or demat services are being added. An account opening is separate from approval for a credit card or loan.
Use the four official product links above to check terms and start an application through the bank. Keep the final variant and fee confirmation with your joining documents. For the exit checklist, read our guide to salary accounts after resignation.
