Job Description

Japanese scientists founded the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) in 1949. It is situated in Mishima City, around an hour’s ride by bullet train from Tokyo. Natural scenery and well-known tourist attractions including Mount Fuji, Hakone, and Izu surround the NIG.

Job Title: NIG Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Genetics

Location: National Institute of Genetics, Mishima-city, Shizuoka, Japan

Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (up to 3 years with annual reappointments)

Start Date: Flexible, between November 1st, 2024, and October 1st, 2025

Salary: Approximately 4,100,000 JPY per annum (inclusive of tax)

Benefits: Commuting allowance, health insurance, employment insurance

Eligibility:

  • Must hold a PhD degree or expect to obtain it before the start date of employment
  • Proficiency in genetics research
  • Previous enrollment at NIG before March 31, 2024, disqualifies applicants

Position Description:

  • Conduct genetics research under the guidance of a prospective PI at NIG
  • Active participation in NIG research activities, including presentations at colloquia
  • Acknowledge NIG support in publications

Application Procedure:

  1. Consult with a prospective PI about research plans.
  2. Prepare application documents, including CV, research plan, and list of publications.

  4. Arrange for letters of reference to be submitted directly to NIG by the supervisor and host PI.

  • Representative Paper (maximum of 3 papers)

Selection Process:

  • Preliminary Screening (Document Review): Shortlisted candidates will be notified by early August.
  • Secondary Screening (Interview): Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
  • Final Selection: Results will be emailed by the end of September.
