Key Responsibilities
As a Research Scientist or Team Leader in Biocatalysis at PI Industries, you will:
- Design and Execute Experiments: Conduct enzyme screening, expression, and purification using techniques like affinity, ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC).
- Lead Scale-Up Projects: Design studies and lead workstreams for lab-to-kilo scale biotransformations (0.1–20 L) and purification (mg–10 g and higher).
- Optimize Processes: Enhance process robustness, troubleshoot enzyme stability, mass transfer, fouling, and resin lifetime issues.
- Characterize Enzymes: Use biochemical and biophysical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, HPLC, LC-MS, and UV-Vis for enzyme analysis.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work with molecular biology, fermentation, and analytical teams to ensure seamless project workflows.
- Maintain Records: Document experiments, analyze data, and present findings in internal meetings.
- Leadership (SRS/TL Roles): Lead project teams, coordinate cross-functional activities, and contribute to strategic planning for biocatalysis and downstream processing.
Qualifications and Experience
To excel in this role, you should bring:
- Educational Background: M.Sc./M.Tech./Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Chemical/Bioprocess Engineering. Ph.D. preferred for Senior Research Scientist (SRS) and Team Leader (TL) roles, with peer-reviewed papers or patents.
- Experience:
- Research Scientist (RS): 3–5 years (M.Sc.) or fresh Ph.D.
- Senior Research Scientist (SRS): 5–8 years (M.Sc.) or 2–4 years (Ph.D.).
- Team Leader (TL): 8–12 years (M.Sc.) or 5–8 years (Ph.D.) with at least 2 years of team leadership experience.
- Technical Skills:
- Biocatalysis: Expertise in enzyme selection, screening, cofactor recycling, immobilization, solvent/aqueous systems, pH/DO/mass transfer control, scale-up, and green metrics.
- Purification/Downstream: Experience with clarification, precipitation, AKTA/FPLC, chromatography (Affinity/IEX/HIC/SEC), ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UF/DF), tangential flow filtration (TFF), solvent exchange, crystallization, and lyophilization.
- Analytics/Tools: Proficiency in HPLC/UPLC, GC, LC-MS, SDS-PAGE, chiral analytics, Design of Experiments (DoE) using JMP/Minitab, ELN/LIMS, and strong Excel/data handling skills.
- Functional Competencies: Strong scientific knowledge, experimental skills, documentation, data reporting, analysis, and interpretation.
