Roles & Responsibilities
As a Trainee Executive in Process Development, you’ll split your efforts between two critical areas: Upstream Process Development (USP) and Downstream Process Development (DSP). This blend of lab work, data analysis, and documentation ensures a well-rounded learning experience.
Upstream Process Development (USP) – Cell Growth & Production Phase
- Thaw cell banks and scale up cultures from shake flasks to bench-top bioreactors using CHO or microbial cells.
- Optimize media formulations by preparing and testing nutrient recipes to maximize cell productivity and protein yield.
- Manage bioreactor operations: monitor and control key parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, and agitation speed.
- Perform routine sampling and analysis to track cell viability, density, and metabolite levels (e.g., glucose, lactate).
Downstream Process Development (DSP) – Purification & Recovery Phase
- Harvest and clarify cell cultures via centrifugation or depth filtration to separate cells from protein-containing supernatant.
- Execute chromatography purification using systems like ÄKTA or NGC with resins such as Protein A, Ion Exchange, and Size Exclusion.
- Implement viral clearance steps, including nanofiltration, to guarantee product safety.
- Conduct ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UF/DF) to concentrate the protein and exchange into the final buffer/formulation.
Expect rigorous documentation, compliance with GMP-like standards, and collaboration in a team pushing boundaries in biologics.
Required Qualifications
- Educational Background: M.Pharm or M.Sc in Biotechnology / Biochemistry / Microbiology (freshers only – 2024/2025 pass-outs preferred).
- Strong foundational knowledge in cell culture, bioprocessing, or protein purification techniques.
- Good analytical mindset, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.
- Basic lab skills and familiarity with documentation practices are a plus.
