Responsibilities
As a Downstream Application Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in designing and optimizing downstream processes for biopharmaceutical production. Your key responsibilities include:
- Process Development: Develop and optimize downstream processes, including chromatography for customer and in-house projects, using mammalian or microbial purification systems.
- Experimentation: Conduct small-scale, bench-scale, and pilot-scale experiments to enhance process efficiency and troubleshoot challenges.
- Technology Transfer: Lead downstream process technology transfer to clinical and commercial manufacturing scales, ensuring seamless scale-up.
- Documentation: Prepare technical reports, SOPs, and batch records while maintaining accurate electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) per Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
- Collaboration: Work closely with downstream processing, analytical, quality assurance, and regulatory teams to integrate processes into end-to-end biomanufacturing workflows.
- Innovation: Stay updated on advancements in bioprocessing technologies, incorporating resin technologies and innovative approaches to improve scalability and sustainability.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- Education: Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or related fields with a focus on downstream processing.
- Experience: 3+ years in downstream process development for biologics, with hands-on expertise in mammalian or microbial purification systems.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in single-use bioreactor systems, chromatography techniques, and process monitoring tools. Familiarity with cGMP guidelines, process analytical technology (PAT), and automation is preferred.
- Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects, collaborate in a matrixed environment, and meet tight deadlines.
- Language: Business-level proficiency in English (written and verbal).
- Additional: Willingness to travel as needed and knowledge of regulatory standards in biomanufacturing.
